Importance of Hydration
We’ve all heard it before; staying hydrated is key to our health, and it’s even more crucial when you’re working out. Hydrating properly can help you maintain energy levels, keep joints lubricated, regulate body temperature, and even ensure your heartbeat is steady. Despite knowing this, many of us still struggle to hydrate before, during, and after our workouts effectively. So here are some best practices to help you get your hydration levels just right.
Hydrating Before Your Workout
Do your best to start every workout well-hydrated. This means drinking plenty of water throughout the day, not just right before you exercise. A good rule of thumb is to consume at least 8 ounces of water 20 to 30 minutes prior to a workout. Be mindful of overhydration too, as consuming excessive water could lead to discomfort during your workout.
Staying Hydrated During Your Workout
While exercising, aim to drink about 8 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes. This might seem like a lot, but remember, our bodies lose a significant amount of fluids through sweat during workouts. If you’re doing a high-intensity workout or exercising in a hot environment, you might need to drink even more to compensate for the additional fluid loss.
Rehydrating After Your Workout
Rehydrating post-workout is just as vital as hydrating pre-workout. After you’re done exercising, try to replenish the water you’ve lost during your workout. Again, about 8 ounces per 20 minutes is a good guide to follow. But don’t limit yourself to just water; hydrating fluids can come from sources like milk or even a recovery smoothie.
Listen to Your Body
The amount of water one needs can vary greatly. Factors such as physical condition, age, or nature of workout can influence the amount of water you need. Remember, the color of your urine is a good indicator of hydration levels- pale or clear color is a good sign while dark indicates the need for more fluids.
Keep Hydrating, Keep Exercising
Remaining hydrated isn’t just about following these guidelines; it’s about knowing your body and adapting your hydration needs to your lifestyle and even weather conditions. Remember, just as hydration is important, so is consistent exercise.
