The Importance of Water
Ever wonder why your coach or gym buddy is always reminding you to drink more water? Well, your body largely depends on water to function properly, especially when you’re pumping iron, doing cardio, or flexing your muscles in yoga.
Hydration and Your Body
Can I get a drum roll, please? It’s time for a fitness fact: Your body is made up of about 60% water! You heard that right. Water plays a key role in our bodies, assisting in digestion, absorption of nutrients, circulation, saliva creation, transportation of nutrients, and maintaining body temperature.
Dehydration and Its Effects on Fitness Performance
Nobody likes feeling sluggish while working out. But did you know, even a minor level of dehydration can have a significant impact on your performance at the gym? With less water, your body struggles to maintain its temperature, leading to fatigue, muscle cramps, and overall subpar performance.
How Much Water Do You Need?
This question is a bit like asking, “How long is a piece of string?” It varies for each individual. However, a general guideline is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon a day, also known as the “8×8 rule”.
Remember, Every Little Bit Counts!
Staying optimally hydrated doesn’t mean you have to lug around a gallon jug of water. Small, consistent sips throughout the day can also make a big difference. Dehydration doesn’t only occur on sweltering summer days; it can happen any time. So keep up the fluids, friends!
