Sorry folks, work, travel, and job issues have gotten in the way of my weekly blog posts, but I’m back! I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
One of our awesome new clients asked me if working out, increasing strength, and improving fitness would allow her to recover from sickness or potential injury in the future faster? In other words would it improve her overall resiliency.
The short answer is yes. The more resilient your body, the easier it will be to fight off cold viruses, other infections, and muscle sprains and strains. This got me thinking of The Sickness-Wellness-Fitness Continuum pictured above from CrossFit.
The leading cause of death worldwide is chronic disease. Leading the way is heart disease, followed by type 2 diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. With appropriate diet and exercise interventions these are mostly preventable. Over 80% of health costs are for treating chronic disease.
So why should you strive to be closer to FITNESS?
Fitness can act as a buffer against sickness or injury. Since a fit person is more resilient, they have to regress to wellness in order to reach sickness. Their “fitness” level is buying them time.
One study recently found that 92.3% of COVID related deaths had multiple co-morbidities present, meaning that the deaths potentially could have been prevented if the person were healthier to begin with. The leading cause was obesity, or being over fat as that generally leads down the slippery slope or high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

So how do we improve fitness?
Your overall health is determined not only by diet and exercise but also your daily habits, such as sleep, non exercise movement like walking, water intake and how you manage stress. The easiest way to move closer to fitness in the above continuum is to take a holistic approach building better habits and adding an exercise regimen in.
